Milk in skincare has been around since the beginning of time. The ancient Egyptians used animal oils, salt, alabaster, and sour milk to aesthetically improve the skin. When sour milk was used to improve the skin, lactic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid, was the active agent. Cleopatra was renowned throughout history for her radiant skin and her stunning beauty. She was said to bathe in milk to keep her infamous glowing complexion, as well as use sour milk as a facial chemical peel. The lactic acid in the sour milk would allow the surface layer of the skin to peel off, leaving a fresh, unblemished layer underneath. She wasn’t the only one to hop on the milk wagon, Poppaea Sabina (30-65 AD), Emperor Nero’s second wife, was also a big fan of the milk bath. In 77 AD, Pliny the Elder wrote about Poppaea’s obsession with donkey milk and how its properties smoothed over wrinkles and softened her skin. Valeria Messalina (17-48 AD), Emperor Claudius I’s wife, used to make face masks with slices of bread soaked in donkey’s milk. Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of France’s King Henry ll in the sixteenth century, would take milk baths to maintain youthful and plump skin. Pauline Bonaparte (1780-1825), Napoleon’s sister, was also famous for indulging in donkey milk baths. To enjoy a truly decadent bath, she apparently had servants make a hole in the ceiling above her bath so they could pour the milk through it. Skincare experts took the hint and discovered there was so much more to milk as an amazing natural ingredient for skin care. We are going to show you all the goat milk benefits in this ultimate guide to natural beauty.
Lactic Acid For The Skin
One of the key ingredients in MOONMAG Organic SkinCare products is goat milk, which contains a number of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, triglycerides and lactic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid), all of which provide a range of positive effects for your skin. From keeping your skin moisturized to aiding in the natural cell shedding processes, goat milk boasts numerous anti-aging benefits.
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a group of plant and animal-derived acids used in a variety of skincare products. Research on the uses and efficacy of AHAs is extensive. There are seven types of AHAs commonly used however, out of all the AHAs available, glycolic and lactic acids are the most promising and well researched. Glycolic and lactic acids are also proven to lessen the likelihood of irritation. Products containing AHAs have a variety of use-cases, such as smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture and tone, unblocking and cleansing pores, adjusting the pH of the skin, and improving skin condition in general.
Lactic acid is an AHA that’s essentially sour milk used to produce smooth skin and balance your skin’s PH level. It lightly exfoliates by dissolving dead skin cells and has been used by ancient Egyptians for centuries to improve the overall aesthetic of skin.
Using acids at lower strengths makes them less irritating and less aggressive, but still effective. What is even better is that you don't have to see peeling to see results! Our products have just enough lactic acid in them to stimulate cell turnover and dissolve the crud between skin cells so they fall off at the same time while keeping the shedding invisible to the eye.
We don't have to worry about creating the perfect balance of lactic acid in our formulations because they are naturally occurring in goat milk. But, products containing acids like lactic acid are only as potent as the amount of free-acid compounds used. If your skincare has too much acid, your skin can sting and become inflamed. However, if you use too little, nothing happens at all. You want to feel something without burning your face off.
When you first start using MOONMAG Organic Skin Care products, your skin may tingle or become red for a bit once you apply, but this is a sign that the lactic acid and magnesium are penetrating the skin and doing their job. Magnesium oil is highly concentrated saltwater and can sting and burn as it heals the acidic mantle of the skin and restores the skin’s pH level. Don’t be alarmed as these will diminish with each use. Using MOONMAG Organic Skin Care products will give you instant and immediate results like glowing, radiant, velvety soft, firmer, more even-toned and youthful skin.
Clay Mask Blends
The clay blends we put together in our MOON MASKS are nothing short of intense. Each proprietary clay blend is going to draw out toxins, chemicals, dirt, and impurities while increasing circulation to the surface of your skin. In order for your skin to be healthy, you need this! You want to bring more blood to the surface of your skin because your blood is loaded with healing properties like oxygen, vitamins, and minerals that your skin needs to repair itself.
If you have oily or troubled skin, don't be afraid to use the masks up to 2x’s a day or use it as a spot treatment. If you have dry skin, using it once a day or several times a week would work better and allow your skin to retain more moisture. You can leave the masks on as long as you like, but to get the most bang for your buck, try to let them dry completely. You can also use the masks on your neck and chest, under your boobs and under your armpits to detox your pits.
The pH Of Skin
There is an epic war happening on the surface of your skin every day. Our skin is naturally designed to ward off infection and environmental stresses but is affected by the skin’s pH levels. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 considered “neutral.” The lower numbers are acidic, while the upper levels are considered alkaline. According to the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, the healthiest pH is around 4.7, definitely below 5. Their research demonstrated that a person’s skin with pH values below 5.0 was in better condition than skin with pH values above 5.0. The closer the pH gets to 7 the more skin issues you will have.
The thin, protective layer on the surface of your skin is referred to as the acid mantle. The acid mantle is made up of natural oils, sweat, and dead skin cells, and is slightly more acidic in nature to prevent harmful contaminants that are naturally alkaline from penetrating and damaging the skin. It takes approximately 2 weeks for your acid mantle to heal. Skin that is too alkaline can be more susceptible to acne because a certain level of acidity is needed to inhibit bacterial growth on the skin.
On the flip side, skin treated with products that are overly acidic also can be problematic. They too can over-strip natural oils, which can temporarily disrupt the acidic mantle of the skin causing dryness, flaking, and irritation.
Magnesium Chloride is another powerful ingredient. It is highly concentrated saltwater. It has antimicrobial properties and is a disinfectant. This is why it is notorious for helping with skin issues like acne, bacne, dermatitis, and even eczema. Healthy skin should be acidic, about 4.7pH, and when the pH of your skin becomes off, it allows bad bacteria to take over and wreak havoc because a certain level of acidity is needed to inhibit bacterial growth on the skin. Magnesium Chloride helps to restore the natural acidic pH of your skin, as well as the goat milk and goat kefir, and that is why our skincare works for so many people!
Because magnesium chloride is salt, it alone will burn and itch until your body adjusts to it. Some believe the itching and burning are caused by your pH levels and others believe it is due to a magnesium deficiency. Either way, everyone agrees that the more you use it, the less itching and burning you experience and that it isn’t harmful or bad in any way. While it can be irritating and uncomfortable, it isn’t a sign that something bad is happening to your skin. In fact, it is actually healing and restoring your skin. Many of our customers notice blemishes, spots, and acne disappearing within the first couple of applications. To lessen the intensity of Magnesium Chloride in its pure form, we meld it with skin-loving ingredients. When it is combined and diluted with the other ingredients it is still powerful but without the agitation.
Raw Goat Kefir
Goat kefir is our third ingredient that is a natural antibacterial agent and probiotic, which helps fight against bad bacteria. One of these probiotics is Lactobacillus kefir and is only found in kefir. According to studies, Lactobacillus kefir can stop the growth of bad bacterias, including E. coli, Helicobacter Pylori, and Salmonella, and can fight that bad bacteria in the body. A carbohydrate found in kefir called Kefiran also has antibacterial properties. The active probiotics stimulate your skin to produce its own anti-aging ingredients including collagen, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants while AHAs gently buff your skin to a smoother, brighter finish.
Kefir also restores the pH of the skin, or the acid mantle, to where your skin becomes an antimicrobial killing machine and destroys bad bacteria on the skin while replenishing the good bacteria. Goat milk and kefir have similar pH levels to that of our skin. The acid mantle is an effective form of protection, but if your pH level is too alkaline or too acidic, the mantle is disturbed. Skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, and rosacea may result because a certain level of acidity is needed to inhibit bacterial growth on the skin. Additionally, it contains naturally occurring lactic acid, an Alpha Hydroxy Acid, which is used in anti-aging creams and chemical peels.
Which brings us to the fact that goat milk skincare acts as a gentle chemical peel. Chemical peels are very popular for their wrinkle-reducing and anti-aging results. They are powerful chemical exfoliants depending on which acid is used and are known to burn off the top layer of your skin and cause intense shedding which is very unsightly for about 3 to 4 weeks. Lactic acid is a chemical exfoliant but is much gentler and provides exfoliation over time so you don't have the unpleasant discomfort and scaly skin, but you still get the anti-aging benefits.
To recap, if you experience any redness, burning, or itching, it is very normal and the more you use the products the less this will happen as the pH and acid mantle are healed and restored. You will also notice how soft your skin becomes with each use.
Coffee Scrubs For Face
Coffee Scrubs for face and Coffee Scrubs for body are essential for glowing skin. Coffee grounds are a mechanical exfoliant. Exfoliants, when used regularly, can help break pigmented cells apart, which will lessen their appearance. See it in action as it clears up Keratosis Pilaris, evens out skin tone, fades stretch marks and cellulite, and leaves you feeling as silky soft as a baby's rear end.
Along with being a great exfoliant to instantly rejuvenate the skin, coffee has been widely studied for its anti-inflammatory properties and is a great solution for those suffering from breakouts as the antioxidants in coffee can help soothe red and inflamed skin. Some research indicates it reduces the appearance of age spots by assisting your skin in generating new cells (it gives the skin cells a push). It is loaded with naturally occurring oils from the coffee beans that leave your skin silky soft and velvety smooth. Our coffee scrub provides several skin benefits including reviving dull, tired skin, reducing puffiness, improving skin texture and circulation thus making skin more uniform in appearance and soft to the touch for that radiant glow you deserve.
Tip: remember to gently massage it on your face as it is abrasive.
Another great use for our Magnesium Infused Kefir Coffee Scrubs is using it on your hands. If you want to smooth out wrinkles and soften your hands, massage and rub it around your hands for several minutes in the shower. Your hands will become silky smooth and flawless. You can also use it on your legs, your butt and other areas that need smoothing and softening. Especially when used after shaving, your entire body will be velvety soft to the touch for a couple of days. Coffee is also known to be a natural probiotic and is excellent for your skin.
